Na ozemlju današnje Albanije so živeli Iliri. Od Turkov so sprejeli muslimansko vero in živeli dolga stoletja v okviru Otomanskega imperija. Prej se pojavi še krščanska (katoliška) in pravoslavska vera, vendar prevladuje predvsem muslimanska vera. Številke se razlikujejo. Albanska dežela je živela pod trdo oblastjo Osmanskega cesarstva (Turčija) štiri stoletja, bile so vstaje in upori zato so oblasti v koncu 16 stoletja pričele z intenzivno islamizacijo pod prisilo. Osmansko cesarstvo so čutili tudi Srbi in Bosna, vendar je vladala tudi slednja kraljevina, dobro znana Habsburška oblast(Avstrija), ki so jo pa čutile tudi ostala Slovanske dežele.
